Jean Alexandre Rémy COUDER
Paris 1808 - 1879

Oil on canvas: 21 x 16 cm
Signed lower right

Painter of historical subjects, genre scenes and still lifes. He began his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1824 under Baron Gros, firstly attracted by sculpture and engraving and later moving on to painting. Couder participated at the Paris Salon between 1833 and 1868 and was awarded a Third Class Medal in 1836 and appointed Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1853. Although mainly known for his works depicting historical and genre scenes, he appears more at ease in his still life painting, where his detailed compositions are fluid and well composed.
